Challenge

In 2016, the latest year for which incidence data are available, 245,299 new cases of Female Breast Cancer were reported, and 41,487 women died of Female Breast Cancer in the United States. For every 100,000 women, 124 new Female Breast Cancer cases were reported and 20 died of cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by heart disease. One of every four deaths in the United States is due to cancer.

Solution

Cancer costs are 2-3 times the rate of other health care costs and are projected to continue increasing. Average out-of-pocket expenses for an individual are $1,107 in the first year after a cancer diagnosis and $747 annually thereafter. Some cancer patients pay $10,000 in out-of-pocket expenses before insurance coverage begins. There is research that there is a link between bankruptcy and morbidity in the US. Our monies go to help these pay these bills and save their lives a second time.

Long-Term Impact

As stated above, if we help these patients' and their families pay off these bills not only are we helping our economy not suffer; but we are helping these patients fully recover from their disease without additional hardship. We also are helping these patients remain in their jobs and be productive citizens in turn securing the job markets and financial health overall.
