Medical assistance to rural Venezuelan communities

Our last medical, dental and psychological outreach program was successfully carried out in Araure, Portuguesa State, Venezuela, serving the community of that state. During the program, we attended a total of 917 patients and offered 1,648 consultations in the areas of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otorhinolaryngology, Dermatology, Surgery, Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Bioanalysis, Psychology and Psychiatry.

In the medicine field, 699 patients were attended, out of which, 36.48% (n=255) were pediatric patients and the other 63.52% (n=444) were adult patients. Of these patients, the distribution by sex corresponded to 64.8% (n=453) female patients and 35.2% (n=246) male patients. After said consultations, CUMIS was able to offer treatment for the most frequently found pathologies in children and adults. Regarding the latter, the provision of adequate coverage in the treatment of chronic diseases was granted.The assistance for each medical consultation corresponded to:

Pediatrics: 230 patients
Internal Medicine: 250 patients
Dermatology: 175 patients
Ophthalmology: 210 patients
Otorhinolaryngology: 204 patients
Obstetrics and Gynecology: 93 patients
Bioanalysis: 68 patients

We also gave talks on different topics that help us to generate a sustainable impact on society and help us to prevent prevalent diseases in the community. 

In the dental area, 288 patients were attended, among different specialties: general dentistry, pediatric dentistry and oral surgery during which 919 dental procedures were made. The distribution of attended patients was: 52.43% (n=151) adults and 47.56% (n=137) pediatric patients.

In the psychology area, 66 patients attended consultations. Twenty one workshops were held, topics covered included mental health and emotion identification, domestic and gender - based violence, psychology rol in society, death, with 567 direct beneficiaries and 1,909 indirect beneficiaries. 

In order to make a sustainable change through health promotion, more than 1,000 condoms were distributed during sexual and reproductive health workshops and 40 Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARCS) were placed, 50 dignity kits were distributed during menstrual hygiene talks and 100 anti-lice brushes kits were distributed during infectious diseases. A total of 847 people benefited from CUMIS psychoeducational seminars and conferences; topics covered included sexual and reproductive health, WASH programs, nutrition, deforestation, menstrual hygiene, skin care, prevention of hypertension, and infectious diseases.

At CUMIS we are firm believers that if there is a way to have a positive impact on another person's life, it is through the sum of each small act of kindness. We are quite sure that, with the help of the noblest hearts, we will continue to bring health to the most disadvantaged communities in our country.

One of our last medical, dental and psychological outreach programs were successfully carried out in Maniapure, Bolivar State, Venezuela, serving the Houttoja, E'ñepa and Jivi indigenous communities. A total of 1,455 beneficiaries were reached: 1,019 patients in the medical area, 282 patients in the dental area, and 154 direct beneficiaries in phycology. During which 1,663 consultations were offered in the fields of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otorhinolaryngology, Dermatology, Ophtalmology, Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Bioanalysis and Psychology.

In the medicine field, 1,019 patients were attended, out of which, 47.5% (n=484) were adults and the other 52.5% (n=535) were pediatric patients. Of these patients, the distribution by sex corresponded to 62.22% (n=634) female patients and 37.78% (n=385) male patients. After said consultations, CUMIS was able to offer treatment for the most frequently found pathologies in children and adults. Regarding the latter, the provision of adequate coverage in the treatment of chronic diseases was granted.

The attendance by medical consultation corresponded to:

• Pediatrics: 317 patients
• Internal Medicine: 320 patients
• Ophtalmology: 155 patients
• Otolaryngology: 136 patients
• Obstetrics and Ginecology: 151 patients
• Dermathology: 182 patients
• Bioanalysis: 73 patients

In the dental area, 282 patients were attended, among different specialties: General Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Surgery during wich 938 dental procedures were made. The distribution of attended patients was: 48.3% (n=136) adults and 51.7% (n=146) pediatric patients. 

In the psychology area, 19 patients were attended in consultations. Twenty-two workshops were held, topics covered included mental health and emotion identification, domestic and gender - based violence, with 154 direct beneficiaries and 662 indirect beneficiaries. 

In order to make a sustainable change through health promotion, more than 850 condoms were distributed during sexual and reproductive health workshops and 27 Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARCS) were placed, 126 dignity kits were distributed during menstrual hygiene talks and more than 240 soaps were distributed during WASH workshops. A total of 673 people benefited from CUMIS psychoeducational seminars and conferences; topics covered included sexual and reproductive health, WASH programs, nutrition, menstrual hygiene, and infectious diseases.
