Dear Friends,

On behalf of all our staff and patients, thank you for your generous giving to Partners In Health. We are so grateful for your partnership.

Cyclone Freddy, the longest-lasting tropical cyclone ever recorded in the southern hemisphere, hit Southern Malawi on March 13. It left a path of destruction, killing more than 679 people, and injuring thousands more.

Today, residents are still recovering after being displaced from their homes by the storm and floodwaters. But they’re not doing it alone—thanks to your support, Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU), as Partners In Health is known in Malawi, has been working side-by-side with residents to meet immediate needs and re-build for the future.

Your support has been critical in these efforts. Thanks to you, APZU clinicians, working together with local District hospitals, conducted more than 48,000 outreach clinic visits, provided more than 7,000 vaccinations, and delivered more than 2,200 social support packages (flour, sugar, cooking oil, mosquito nets, blankets, and water purification supplies).

July 2023 Update: Cyclone Freddy Disaster Relief

Dear Friends,

Partners In Health (PIH) staff and patients are so grateful for the tremendous support that we received during the 2023 Cyclone Freddy Disaster. These efforts make a huge difference in the recovery for dozens of family in Malawi since the record-breaking storm hit southern Malawi on March 13.

Malawi has reported 676 deaths, 537 people missing, and 2,171 injured as of April 3. More than 659,000 people have been displaced from their homes due to flooding, mudslides, and strong winds. Malawi’s government has declared a “state of disaster” in the southern region of the country, which sustained the greatest number of casualties and most significant infrastructure damage.

Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU) staff, as Partners In Health is known in Malawi, are safe. All 14 of our health centers in Neno District are open to patients. Our APZU team has been tending to patients with medical assistance, psychological care and other emergency support after the cyclone. APZU team visits the Mitondo camp in Chikwawa District in response to the disaster. The team has offered clinical services as well as food packages for residents of the camp, all who were displaced by the cyclone. The food packages were given to 750 families, with an estimated population of 4279 people. They consisted of a bag of maize flour, beans, Soya pieces, cooking oil, salt and sugar. Each package will last the average family 2.5 weeks.

APZU will maintain a nimble emergency response that enables us to refine our budgets and activities based on the evolving situation. On behalf of the patients and families impacted by this storm, thank you for your contribution and support. Your support is timely and necessary!
