Thousands of children in rural Uganda attend school hungry, unable to concentrate or perform well. In the last two years since 2024, Development Alert has been feeding 1,200 children annually. This project will provide daily nutritious meals to 500 primary school children, improving attendance, academic performance, and overall health. Alongside feeding, we will establish school gardens to ensure long-term sustainability and reduce dependence on external support.
In rural communities in Uganda, children go to school without food because their families cannot afford lunch. As a result, children study on empty stomachs, concentration and academic performance decline, school absenteeism and dropout rates increase, malnutrition affects physical and mental development. For many of these children, the school meal may be the only meal they receive that day. Without intervention, hunger will continue to limit education and future opportunity for these children.
This project will provide daily nutritious lunches to 500 vulnerable primary school children while building a sustainable feeding system through school-based agriculture. Project will; purchase and deliver organic maize flour, beans, and other food supplies, train teachers and community members in nutrition and food preparation, establish school gardens, monitor student attendance and performance. This ensures both immediate relief (feeding) and long-term sustainability (organic food production)
The project will ensure 500 children receive daily school meals, increased school attendance and retention, improved concentration and academic performance, reduced cases of hunger and malnutrition, and over time, schools will begin producing their own food through school gardens ensuring no more school child goes hungry while at school.
