By Pam Rogers | Capacity Advisor/Addiction Trainer
Firstly, thank you for participating in the Global Giving year end campaign and supporting our new project in Karen State to seek a reduction in food aid dependence and to provide garden therapy to our recovering addiction clients.
This is our first report to you, on the project. So far this month, we are in the midst of building a training centre at the DARE Centre in T’ree Poh Kwee village, Karen State. We are planning to train 5 new Addiction Workers from the nearby villages and to set up training opportunities for other ethnic groups in Burma.
For the organic farm, our core staff have negotiated for the land next to our Centre with the local rice grower. As well, we are in the middle of identifying our garden managers and we have a trainer from KESAN (Karen Environmental and Social Action Network) to provide a trainer in organic farming practices to our new managers.
Once we have all that in place we will start setting up our systems and be ready for the benefits to the clients by June, 2017. Needless to say, in our DARE Centre in Karen State, we are definitely off the grid. What little electricity we have is provided by solar panels, cooking is done on wood stoves and candles light nights.
It is early days in our Agrow-Therapy Project, but thanks to you we have the seed money (literally) to start. It is very exciting for all of us. We will let you know how it is going, as things progress.
From all of us at DARE Network
