The Villagers Cooperate

By Pam Rogers | Capacity Advisor/Addiction Trainer

The Garden is Growing
The Garden is Growing

Last report we described to you how difficult it has been to get land for our DARE Sustains project.  The Nats (Spirits) need the land we wanted and the villagers would not sell or rent it to us because of the imperative to appease the Nats.

Now, they have found some land for DARE's project on the side of a mountain only 3 minutes away from our DARE Treatment/Training Centre, in Karen State.  Here water is also not a  problem.

The staff and clients meanwhile have reorganized the DARE Centre landscape and created a large vegetable garden.  This garden is thriving.  We have found our Garden Manager, Saw Htoo Bay, who is a recovering client, who went throught our treatment program.  We are proud to have him as our staff member now.  He will plan and direct the organic garden.

On a therapeutic level, the DARE Network clients report enjoying working in the garden and seeing the fruits of their labour grow.  The best part is reconnecting with nature and the earth.  It is very calming and grounding for them.  And the extra best part is everyone is now eating fresh, organic vegetables to strengthen their health. It is also good for the budget.

The surrounding villagers can also see that it is possible to grow food in their own area, instead of making the trip to the city to get vegetables, many of which come from China.  DARE has set the example.

Thanks once again for your kind support to this project that has so many benefits.

all best
