Summary

In Darfur children are seriously malnourished. Conflict, drought, & soaring inflation are devastating lives. Our Goat Loans provide nutrient-rich milk to children and an income for their mothers to pay for medicines, food, schooling & emergencies. Donkeys provide the only transportation. Sustainable projects are helping families survive, giving them help today and a livelihood for the future. Right now, we urgently need Kids Kitchen Kits, Seeds & Medicines to keep people and animals healthy.

Challenge

In Darfur rural communities struggle out of sight of the rest of the world. Prolonged violence and drought have had a devastating impact and mean that families simply cannot afford to feed their children. Protein is rare and an income impossible. Currently our Emergency Kids Kitchen Kits & Seeds are supplementing milk from goats we have loaned to the 110 Kids for Kids Villages. We must ensure the health of our goats until we can start loaning goats again so Vet Medications are needed too.

Solution

All our projects are sustainable and enable families to stay in their own homes. Our Goat Loan has been called the "best micro-finance plan ever". A family is lent 5 nanny goats, and a billy goat shared between 3 families. After 2 years when the flock has grown, 5 kid goats are passed on to benefit another family in the village! Each little flock provides milk for children and an income for mothers who can sell surplus milk and yoghurt at market. Donkeys provide transport and help carry goods.

Long-Term Impact

Right now, we must provide emergency food, seeds and medication as conflict in Sudan continues. As soon as it is safe we will adopt more villages and provide Goats and Donkeys. So we must build up our funds now. Goats improve the health of children and provide families with greater income security. By ensuring goats are passed to a new family every 2 years, our project benefits the whole community over time. Donkeys save time completing basic tasks, giving children the time to go to school.
