30-year-old Haya is making a huge difference in her village of Aefin. After graduating from the midwife training program in Khartoum in December, Haya returned to Aefin Village fully qualified and equipped with her midwifery kit, mobile phone, and cross breed donkey - and began saving lives. In fact, in just her third week of work, Haya handled the birth of a little one to a mother in her village! The baby and mother were both safe thanks to Haya - she is a natural. Haya spends her work seeing many patients, both women young and old, friends and neighbors included, and advises them about their pregnancy's, helps them through childbirth, and provides post-natal care teaching new mothers how to feed their babies.
More recently, Haya has been attending and leading village meetings where she teaches women about what they should and should not do during pregnancy. There are so many things that pose potential risks to pregnant women that those in rural Darfur villages do not know about. For instance, many women are not aware that they should not be carrying heavy jerrycans of water to and from handpumps! And of course, they should not do nearly as much work as they would when not pregnant - especially not late in their pregnancy. But Haya is on the case!
Not only does Haya see patients in her own home in Aefin village, she also visits women in the nearby Azagarfa Village Health Unit once a week. Her trusty Donkey has made it possible for her to travel the distance to Azagarfa, enabling her to see even more patients who require her expertise. Don't worry - thanks to her mobile phone, the village leader in Aefin can always call her if she is needed in an emergency!
Haya knows best, and she has requested a revolving medicine fund and a health unit in Aefin Village. Will you support our Midwifery and Healthcare projects so we can make this possible? Haya's village has earned the right to a Health Unit because of the wonderful work both she and the volunteers in the village have been doing to ensure that all the projects we have introduced to Aefin are sustainable, helping more and more families - including our goat loans! Please help us to fund Haya's Health Unit.
