Summary

Kids for Kids works with communities in Darfur, Sudan an area that suffers the increasing effects of climate change. Kids for Kids is planting community forests in villages in Darfur, Sudan. The forests will create a microclimate that will reduce soil temperatures, increase soil moisture levels, stabilise the soil and stop the desert encroaching. The 14 different species of drought-resistant tree also provide shade, fruit and the seeds of the Moringa tree can also be used to clean water.

Challenge

Current climate change patterns may cause more extreme and variable climates in the future, threatening agricultural productivity in many areas of Darfur. This in turn exacerbates the level of poverty in the area as well as food insecurity. Darfur is in The Sahel region of Africa which is particularly vulnerable to climate change. These warmer temperatures lead to a degradation of the land and an increase in desertification resulting in the desert encroaching into agricultural land.

Solution

One of the easiest and simplest ways to prevent desertification and land degradation is to stabilise the soil. Planting trees increases the soil moisture in the area, stabilises the soil and also reduces temperatures by creating a microclimate leading to a more fertile environment for crops to grow and also to keep the desert at bay. Planting Moringa also helps to solve the problem of clean water availability, a constant concern in Darfur.

Long-Term Impact

By planting trees, we will be creating microclimates around the village in an area where moisture levels are virtually non-existent. Microclimates will reduce the temperature of the surrounding soil, stabilising moisture levels which reduces desertification and degradation whilst also helping communities to have a more successful crop yield leading to an increase in income and a reduction in food insecurity. We want a community forest in every Kids for Kids village and clean water for all!
