Summary

In rural Ghana, women are poorer, have fewer assets, lower voices and agencies than men. 94% of women work in poor conditions with low income in the informal sector. We provide free 16 months vocational and business training and support needed for 10 unemployed women (18-35 years) from rural parts of South Tongu district to start and run formalised and sustainable enterprises for decent livelihood. Enabling them to provide for their children, create jobs, and lead change in their communities.

Challenge

In South Tongu, 94% of women earn livelihoods in the informal sector by doing menial jobs. Men constitute majority in all employment category in the formal sector. The informal sector lacks structure, regular income, and good working conditions. Due to this, women have less access to financial services. Among the younger population this translates into a situation of destitute. Many get trafficked. This fundraising will train and start up 10 young women enrolled in our fashion design course

Solution

Our survey showed that young women want improved socio-economic conditions, equal rights and brighter future. We train and start-up young women in vocational and technical occupations through our TVET, financial inclusion and business accelerator programmes. Beneficiaries can enroll in any of our 6 TVET courses which come with business management and entrepreneurship training for up-to 16 months. Upon completion we offer financial literacy, linkage to financial products and business development

Long-Term Impact

30 young women have gone through our programmes. 28 have started and are running their own enterprises. Grace, a mother of 4 is one of them. Hitherto, she was a farm-laborer stuck in an abusive marriage with 2 school drop-out children. Today, she's a fashion entrepreneur with 150% increase in income. Her children are back to school and she's left her abusive marriage. There are more women like Grace out there. Through your support we reach, empower and provide them a path to a dignifying life.
