Children's Legal Defense Center lawyers will provide specialized criminal defense services to 20 children who are 14 years old or younger and imprisoned in Somaliland.
In Somaliland, a child must be 15-years-old before the criminal justice system can hold them accountable for their actions. Yet, children under 15, like our 14-year-old client Mohamed (pictured), are routinely arrested, prosecuted and imprisoned despite being too young for criminal punishment.
The Children's Legal Defense Center provides specialized defense services to children under 15 who are arrested and facing criminal charges in Somaliland. Our lawyers use the legal protections in Somaliland's Juvenile Justice Law to defend children too young for criminal punishment, like our client Mohamed, to win their release.
The project will provide specialized criminal defense services to 20 children aged 14 or younger who, like Mohamed, have been unlawfully arrested and are facing criminal charges in Somaliland.
