Dear Esteemed Donors
This report provides an update on the work of Joy for Children Uganda (JFCU) in addressing critical issues that impact women and girls, particularly in rural areas. These issues, including gender-based violence (GBV), child marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), and limited access to education, continue to affect many communities. JFCU’s initiatives have made a significant difference in improving the well-being of women and girls, and with the support of donors, numerous positive changes have been achieved across Uganda.
Gender-based violence remains a pervasive challenge in Uganda, especially in rural communities. JFCU has been at the forefront of advocating for stronger legal protections and offering support to survivors. Through extensive community outreach programs, JFCU has raised awareness about GBV, its harmful effects, and the importance of taking action. The organization has also provided critical support services, including safe spaces for survivors, legal aid, counseling, and medical assistance. Partnerships with local authorities and law enforcement have strengthened reporting mechanisms, ensuring accountability and better protection for survivors of violence. These efforts have led to increased reporting of GBV cases, more effective legal outcomes for survivors, and a reduction in incidents of violence within participating communities.
Child marriage continues to be a significant concern, particularly in rural areas, where girls are often married off at an early age, depriving them of education and a brighter future. JFCU has worked tirelessly to prevent child marriage through advocacy and community education. Efforts have been made to engage families, raising awareness about the risks of early marriage and the importance of keeping girls in school. JFCU has also empowered girls at risk of early marriage by providing scholarships and vocational training opportunities, enabling them to acquire skills that will help them build sustainable futures. These initiatives have successfully prevented hundreds of child marriages, keeping many girls in school and offering them opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Female genital mutilation remains a deeply harmful practice in certain regions of Uganda, affecting many young girls. JFCU has taken bold steps to eradicate FGM by raising awareness in affected communities. Through extensive educational campaigns, JFCU has highlighted the severe health risks and human rights violations associated with FGM. The organization has also worked with local leaders and law enforcement to ensure that FGM is recognized as a criminal offense and that perpetrators are held accountable. In addition, JFCU has provided rehabilitation and support services to survivors, helping them recover physically and emotionally from the trauma of FGM. These efforts have resulted in a steady decline in the practice, as more communities reject FGM and embrace the well-being of their young girls.
Access to education is a fundamental right that remains out of reach for many girls in rural Uganda due to various barriers, including poverty, cultural norms, and inadequate infrastructure. JFCU has been instrumental in improving educational opportunities for girls through several key initiatives. Scholarships have been provided to over 1,000 girls, enabling them to attend school and pursue higher education. JFCU has also worked to improve the quality of education by building and renovating schools, ensuring that girls have access to safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments. Advocacy for equal education has been a central focus, with JFCU pushing for the reduction of school fees and the provision of sanitary products to help girls stay in school. These efforts have led to a significant increase in school enrollment and retention rates for girls, as well as greater opportunities for them to complete their education and enter the workforce.
Despite the progress made, challenges remain. Cultural beliefs and practices that perpetuate gender inequality continue to pose obstacles to change. Limited resources also hinder the ability to scale up programs in more communities, and there is an ongoing need for stronger legal enforcement to protect women and girls from harmful practices. However, JFCU remains committed to overcoming these challenges and expanding its efforts to reach more communities, increase awareness, and provide vital support services.
Looking ahead, JFCU is dedicated to continuing its work to eliminate gender-based violence, child marriage, FGM, and to ensure that every girl has access to quality education. With the continued support of donors, JFCU will be able to reach even more women and girls, empowering them to lead healthier, more prosperous lives and contribute to the development of their communities.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all our donors for their unwavering support, which has made these accomplishments possible. Together, we can continue making a lasting impact on the lives of women and girls across Uganda.
