Empowering Students to Stand Against Violence and Exploitation in Western Uganda

Dear Supporters,

Joy for Children Uganda continues to stand for a simple yet powerful belief that every child deserves to grow up safe, respected, and free from harm. Through our school club mentorship sessions and teacher capacity-building activities, we are equipping both students and educators with the knowledge and confidence to prevent and respond to cases of violence, abuse, and exploitation.

In schools across Western Uganda, safe and open spaces are being created where young people can finally talk about what truly matters their safety, their rights, and their dreams. Guided by trained mentors, students are learning to recognize abuse, understand how to seek help, and stand up for themselves and their peers.

For many, especially girls, these sessions have been life-changing. They provide a rare opportunity to speak openly about issues that are often kept silent, such as sexual harassment, exploitation, and early marriage. In these supportive spaces, students are not only learning they are healing, finding courage, and realizing that their voices matter.

At the same time, teachers and school administrators are being equipped with the tools and knowledge to respond effectively to cases of violence against children. With training focused on empathy, confidentiality, and proper response procedures, educators are becoming the first line of protection for their students. Many have begun integrating child protection topics into classroom discussions and are creating friendlier, safer school environments where every child feels valued and protected.

The transformation in these schools has been remarkable. Students are more confident to speak up and report abuse, while teachers are responding with care, accountability, and renewed commitment. Child Protection Committees have been established, ensuring that prevention and response are not one-time activities but a consistent part of school life.

One teacher from Kabarole shared, “Before the training, I did not know how to approach a child who was being abused. Now, I feel confident to listen, support, and take action.” Stories like this show the real impact of knowledge and compassion working hand in hand and how change begins when awareness meets action.

Keeping Girls in School, Ending Early Marriages

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Child marriage and teenage pregnancy remain some of the greatest barriers to the rights and future of girls in Uganda. Despite progress in awareness and advocacy, many girls are still being forced into marriages before their eighteenth birthday or becoming mothers while still children themselves. These harmful practices rob girls of their education, expose them to gender-based violence, and deny them the opportunity to reach their full potential.

At Joy for Children Uganda (JFCU), we have continued to work with communities, schools, and leaders to challenge the norms and drivers that perpetuate these issues. During this reporting period, our team carried out awareness dialogues with cultural, religious, and community leaders, emphasizing the devastating effects of child marriage and teenage pregnancy on both girls and society as a whole. Parents and guardians were engaged in open discussions about the importance of keeping girls in school and protecting them from early marriage pressures.

In schools, we provided safe spaces where adolescent girls could share their experiences, learn about their rights, and access reproductive health education. Many of the girls we spoke to shared stories of pressure from poverty, cultural expectations, or family arrangements that pushed them toward early marriage. By equipping them with knowledge, confidence, and support, we are helping them to say “no” to child marriage and “yes” to education and a brighter future.

We also engaged boys, teachers, and local authorities to ensure that teenage pregnancy is no longer seen as the sole burden of girls but as a community challenge requiring collective action. Boys learned to understand consent, respect, and the dangers of exploiting girls, while teachers were trained to support pregnant learners and survivors of early marriage rather than pushing them further into isolation.

The impact of this work is already visible. Communities are beginning to speak out against early marriages, parents are showing greater commitment to keeping their daughters in school, and girls are expressing hope for futures beyond early motherhood or forced unions.

Looking ahead, JFCU is committed to scaling up these efforts by reaching more schools and communities, expanding sexual and reproductive health education, and strengthening community structures that protect children. However, this work cannot be sustained without your support.

Your generosity has enabled us to create safe spaces, carry out community dialogues, and empower both girls and boys with the tools to resist harmful practices. Together, we are breaking cycles of poverty, inequality, and violence that stem from child marriage and teenage pregnancy.

Keeping Girls in our communities safe

Dear Esteemed Supporters,

When schools reopened after the holiday break, classrooms filled once again with the sound of children learning and playing. Yet for many girls, the return was not as simple. Some did not come back at all. In the slums and rural communities where Joy for Children Uganda works, teenage pregnancy remains one of the greatest barriers to education. During school holidays, when girls are away from the protection of structured learning, many are exposed to abuse, exploitation, and harmful relationships that result in pregnancy.

The consequences are devastating. A teenage girl who becomes pregnant is far more likely to drop out of school permanently. She faces stigma from her peers, rejection from her family, and shame from her community. Her dreams of becoming a nurse, a teacher, or a leader are suddenly interrupted, and the cycle of poverty and vulnerability tightens around her. For every girl lost to early pregnancy, there is a story of stolen potential and broken promise.

At Joy for Children Uganda, we see the pain but also the resilience of these girls. We meet girls who carry babies on their hips while watching their classmates walk to school in uniform. We meet others who return to school after giving birth, determined to prove that motherhood does not mean the end of education. We meet families torn between marrying off their daughters and keeping them in class. Behind every case is a cry for protection and support that cannot be ignored.

That is why our work is focused on prevention, protection, and restoration. We are engaging parents, teachers, and community leaders to speak out against teenage pregnancy and child marriage. We are supporting schools to become safe spaces where girls can seek help and protection when they are at risk. We are providing counseling and mentorship to girls so that they understand their worth, their rights, and their future possibilities. For those already affected, we are working to help them reintegrate into education and rebuild their confidence.

Your support is making this possible. Because of you, more girls are returning to school, more parents are embracing the value of girls’ education, and more communities are speaking up against harmful practices. But the journey is far from over. Every term, new cases of teenage pregnancy emerge, reminding us of how much more must be done.

With your partnership, we can keep more girls safe, prevent teenage pregnancies, and give every girl the chance to sit in a classroom with hope in her eyes and dreams in her heart.
