Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the Bali tourism economy. The Indonesian government requires pregnant women to pay for a COVID-19 test before giving birth. Families may borrow money or take away from other essentials, like food or medicines, to cover birth costs. Bumi Sehat Bali provides maternal health services by-donation or free, so Indonesian families in Bali don't go into debt or poverty for healthcare.

Challenge

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the Bali tourism economy. Roughly 75,000 people have lost jobs and income. Those who still have jobs have had pay cuts up to 75%. There is little or no money to pay for healthcare. The Indonesian government requires pregnant women to pay for a COVID-19 rapid test before going to a facility to give birth. Families will likely borrow money or take away from other essentials, like food or medicines, to cover the costs of a birth.

Solution

Bumi Sehat Bali offers by-donation and free birth services in Bali, including COVID-19 testing. Bumi Sehat ensures that all patients, regardless of income, receive prenatal care, free prenatal yoga classes, health checkups, any lab testing needed, supplies of prenatal vitamins and midwifery birth services. Families with no or little income will not go into debt, need to sell personal possessions or take money away from other essentials, like food, to pay for prenatal care and birth services.

Long-Term Impact

Bumi Sehat Bali will provide maternal health services for free or by-donation during the pandemic so Indonesian families in Bali don't go into debt, risk being malnourished or go into poverty. This will raise the long term health outcomes for our patient families in Bali with little or no income and help prevent them sliding into debt and poverty during the pandemic as a result of having to pay for health care.
