Summary

We work within a community of families with children with disabilities in Livingstone, Zambia. The economic situation there is desperate. The cost of food has risen to such heights that many cannot afford to buy even the staple cornmeal. In 2020, when the pandemic crisis compounded the already dire situation, we began a monthly distribution of staple food items to these families. In 2021 we started a communal farm. The current drought crisis brings us back to providing emergency food.

Challenge

The community that we serve has always struggled to provide basic necessities like food, shelter, medical care and education, and now the drought has further disrupted Zambia's already devastated economy. These families need to rely on themselves for food security, instead of depending on a government that can not help them.

Solution

In 2020, we started delivering basic food staples to the families monthly. But we really wanted to initiate a more sustainable solution. In 2021, we purchased a 20 acre plot of land, on which the community began a communal farm. People in our community are knowledgable about farming, and have the desire & will to carry this project through. But now, lack of water has killed the staple maize crop, and we must help these families by providing food to get them through this national drought crisis.

Long-Term Impact

While delivering food will help people through the immediate crisis, we hope to be able to put our energy and funding back into the farm soon. The communal farm will provide for several of our community's needs in the future: food, income, work, and the ability to be in control of their own destiny.
