Poverty serves as a catalyst for the rise of illicit drug use, trafficking, and crime, affecting communities worldwide. In Costa Rica, squatter settlements known as precarios emerge as hotspots for these issues. With over 300 precarios housing more than 35,000 families, the majority of whom live below the poverty line, these areas become fertile ground for such challenges. The struggle to overcome economic hardships often entangles residents in a cycle that perpetuates these societal problems.
