Senegal is one of the world's least developed countries. Though literacy levels are rising many adults (48%) are unable to read or write. Poverty often curtails education before children reach the end of secondary or even primary school. This lack of education hinders people's efforts to find good employment or manage businesses effectively. There are few second chances, learning has to be flexible, free and fit round work. One opportunity is The Diapalante Community Education Centre in Kaolack!
At the Diapalante Community Education Centre we offer a rare opportunity in Senegal - free education for all. Our small library and a computer-based learning project support independent learning. We train teenage Young Leaders to lead our fun after-school activities, helping 100+ children learn French, the language used in school. Adults and teenagers benefit from literacy, language or business skills classes. These projects improve the current or future work prospects of 500 people a year.
Each year Diapalante helps 500 people gain work skills and create a more sustainable future for themselves and their families. Our primary school project significantly improves children's overall school performance and helps their educational progress. Teenagers are helped succeed in school and are also introduced to product design and business skills. Adults often need literacy or computer skills to gain new jobs but some need them to just to stay in their current work as Senegal modernises.
