Education for All in Kaolack, Senegal

Since October, coinciding with the start of the school year, the Diapalante Community Centre in Kaolack has once again opened its doors, welcoming members into a new year of learning, growth, and shared opportunity. Guided by its founding principle, “Diapalante: Education for All,” the Centre continues its mission to make education accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.

At the heart of the Centre’s work are basic classes in reading, writing, oral expression, and mathematics, offered in both French and English. These courses are thoughtfully designed to meet the diverse needs of our members. For many, this is their very first experience of formal learning. A significant number of participants never had the chance to attend school, and are now discovering, often for the first time, the French and English alphabets. This first step opens the door not only to literacy, but to greater independence, confidence, and opportunity.

The impact of this learning can be seen clearly in the everyday lives of our members. Modou, one of the Centre’s participants, recently shared his pride in a personal milestone. Thanks to the classes at Diapalante, he is now able to write down his clients’ phone numbers in his diary—something he was previously unable to do. While he is still working to improve his handwriting, this progress represents a transformative step. It allows him to manage his small business more effectively, strengthen his relationships with clients, and carry out his work with greater confidence and professionalism. His achievement reflects the very real and practical value of education in empowering individuals.

The Centre also plays a vital role in supporting members who work in the informal sector. Shopkeepers, mechanics, domestic workers, fuel attendants, and others come to develop essential skills such as reading and writing invoices, using calculators, and learning the professional vocabulary relevant to their trades. These skills help them manage their businesses more efficiently, increase their income, and better support their families. Many also gain the ability to assist their children with schoolwork, strengthening educational progress across generations.

In addition to adult learners, the Centre welcomes school-aged students who attend reinforcement classes to strengthen their academic skills and prepare for exams.
