Restoring Ability & Dignity: Support for Differently Abled Children
Location: Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu, India
Beneficiaries: 120 Differently Abled Children
Implemented by: VOICE Trust
1. Executive Summary
This initiative supports 120 differently abled children in Tiruchirappalli through assistive devices, physiotherapy, medical care, and education support. The goal is to improve mobility, communication, independence, and dignity for children living in underserved rural and semi-urban communities.
2. Case Study StoriesCase Study 1: A Child Who Could Not Walk
Name: “Ravi” (name changed for privacy)
Age: 9 years
Condition: Congenital mobility impairment affecting lower limbs
Ravi was born in a low-income farming family. Due to lack of access to early diagnosis and rehabilitation, he was unable to walk or attend school. He spent most of his time at home, fully dependent on his mother for daily activities.
After intervention through this project:
Ravi was assessed by a physiotherapy team
He received a wheelchair and basic leg support braces
Regular physiotherapy sessions were initiated
Impact:
Within weeks, Ravi gained partial mobility and began attending school with support. For the first time, he was able to interact with other children and participate in classroom learning. His mother reported a significant reduction in physical and emotional burden.
Case Study 2: A Child with Hearing Impairment and Isolation
Name: “Meena” (name changed for privacy)
Age: 12 years
Condition: Moderate-to-severe hearing impairment
Meena lived in near isolation due to her inability to hear or communicate effectively. Her family had no awareness of hearing aids or speech therapy services. She had dropped out of school and remained at home.
After intervention through this project:
Meena underwent hearing assessment
She was provided with a hearing aid
Basic communication and speech support sessions were initiated
Her family received counseling on inclusion and education rights
Impact:
Meena began responding to sound cues and slowly learning to communicate again. She has now re-enrolled in school and is gradually integrating with her peers. Her confidence and emotional wellbeing have improved significantly.
