Summary

Girls living in slums in Uganda often do not make it to school or drop out at an early stage because of the rate of violence and poverty in these areas. Girls are lured into prostitution and child marriage due to lack of alternatives that can foster their development. Rego Foundation offers hands-on computer programming skills for girls 9 - 19+ years old empowering them to become coders rather than child brides. Our project will provide 200 girls with skills essential in this digital century.

Challenge

An average adult living in slums around Uganda earns $1 day with a household of 2 adults and 5 children. In these families, girls are not given the priority when it comes education but rather left home to do house chores. In the quest to meet their basic needs, they resort to prostitution and are set up to marry elderly men who in turn provide for their families. Without skills, girls are unable to compete favorably in the job market, in this digital century thus the vicious cycle of poverty.

Solution

Rego Foundation offers a full stack computer programming training course that equips underprivileged girls with relevant digital skills that they can use to leverage their ability to compete favorably in creating and acquiring jobs. This is coupled with life skills training that empowers girls to gain confidence in public speaking, etiquette and mindset change towards their rights and potential.

Long-Term Impact

This project will empower 200 girls with practical coding skills allowing them to compete and perform is jobs that would require a degree level education they could not afford or rather create future jobs relevant for our future digital economy. This project will eliminate girls' vulnerability to teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortions, child marriage and HIV/AIDS. 200 empowered girls will pull their families out of the slum and thus out of poverty.
