Dear friends,
Thank you so much for your support of PN Vietnam in our efforts to end poverty & inequality in Vietnam through digital education. PN’s work aligns with the following United National Sustainable Development Goals - #1 No Poverty, #4 Quality Education, #5 Gender Equality, #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, and #10 Reduced Inequalities.
PN's mission is to unlock the potential of disadvantaged youths by giving them access to education, and the means to acquire key soft and hard skills in the digital sector. We provide training in our centers in Southeast Asia, and a preparatory program to enter university at our center in Madagascar.
Our training programs are aimed at vulnerable young people aged 17 to 23. Our beneficiaries are selected based on their extremely precarious economic situation. They mainly come from remote and rural areas where education and employment opportunities are scarce, and do not have the means to pursue higher education. We are committed to gender parity -at least half of our students are girls. The selection process includes a motivational interview, English, mathematics and logic tests and a home visits.
Where PN has centers, the offer of professional training is insufficient and costly. In 2021, USAID estimated that 12.1% of adolescents in the Philippines were out of school. The university enrollment rate is only 35.5%, and just 24.4% of these young people get a degree. In Vietnam, 92% of children from the wealthiest families complete their studies, compared to only 31% of the less fortunate. Only about 5% of young Cambodians are enrolled in higher education.
Gender stereotypes continue to negatively influence girls’ opportunities in education and formal employment. In the science sector, the gap is even more marked: in Vietnam in 2020, only 6.87% of employees in the technology industry were women. In the Philippines, among young people neither employed nor in training, 24.1% are women (compared to 13.8% of men). Only 46.2% of science graduates find employment in this field.
The training program provided by PN includes 1 to 2 internships in a company and support towards employment. The course also includes modules related to professional behavior. By offering free, professional and quality training in a growing sector, PN allows marginalized populations to access higher education. Every year, we select at least 50% girls in each of our classes.
Specific to Vietnam, 1 in 5 Vietnamese lives on less than $5.50 per day (World Bank, 2023) and 26% of the population do not have access to the internet. There is a significant social, economic and geographic divide. Although 55.5% of the population are under 35 years old, more than half of young adults aged 16 to 20 do not have access to education.
On behalf of our students, the team at PN and PN Vietnam are grateful for your support. Please view our attached Annual Report to see how your donation leads to lasting change.
