The Proposed Project will address physical and health conditions and challenges associated with disability among poor children under age 12 in Busia and Siaya counties of Kenya through medical rehabilitation by reaching them through community clinics. Challenge

According to Kenya demographic health survey, the disability prevalence rate in Kenya is estimated at 10% of the population (4.44 million people). 66% of the disabled population lives in the rural areas including remote parts of the Busia and Siaya counties. The age group most affected is ages 0-14 which is at 43.4% (1.92 million people). This is concerning because disability early in life can have a negative impact on school attendance, quality of life and productivity for many years to come.

Solution

Comprehensive Physical and Medical intervention can correct most of the problems associated with disability. The main barriers are to do with financial costs, poor or inadequate, treatment, and a lack of knowledge of the health care system. The Project will fill the gap by conducting community outreach clinics and providing comprehensive therapy, awareness and supportive devices to the poor disabled children in the remote communities an effort that will correct their disability and ease suffering

Long-Term Impact

Effective management of the 200 disabled children through effective medical intervention will minimize possibility of permanent disability and further ensure the children are integrated in society and are able to realize their full potential through productive opportunities. Additionally, community awareness creation and proven efficacy of the project will enhance secondary disability prevention by ensuring health problems are identified early and services and referrals are provided rapidly.
