Dear Supporters,
In the last three months, the GVI hub in Cape Town has put a lot of effort into the years school holiday program. This is a program that started last year, and has now become a tradition. At a local library, serving disadvantage children GVI is working to not only tutor and provide a safe space for children, but also to feed those who normally rely on their lunch from school.
In 2017, GVI partnered with the local library for the first time. It started small with around 20 children who participated at the library during the one-week school holiday break. To fill the gap evident of lunch, GVI supplied sandwiches to the children as they could no longer access it from school due to the break. Since we started, the program has grown bigger and bigger and this year we anticipated 50 children to participate.
Due to the cold weather, and proven success we wanted to provide a more filling and warming meal to ensure that the children didn’t go hungry and could concentrate during our educational workshops. Through the GVI Trust donations, our healthcare volunteers purchased, cooked, served and educational children about healthy nutrition and as a result of the weather the focus was vegetable soups. Whilst we did anticipate an increase in attendance, we could only have dreamt that over 70 children showed up for the educationally focused school holiday program.
Between 10am-3pm Monday to Thursday, and half day Fridays, GVI arranged educational sessions for the younger children focusing on Arts and Crafts, English, Health, Confidence as well as Sports and Wellbeing. It was an intense three weeks, but the positive feedback received from our partners, and the evident impact in the children’s attendance made it all worth the hard work.
Through the program, and the donation the hub has been focusing on SDG 2 zero hunger, SDG 3 good health and wellbeing and finally quality education. Whilst the majority of the children participated in the lighter educational classes, there were a group of dedicated students who utilised our free tutoring service. The children and parents had signed up to the program in advance through the library and their local primary school, making it possible for us to target our teaching to their needs. Its fair to say that the 70 eager, positive and resilient children whom we had the privilege to work with had an incredible three week program. This does not only make it possible to provide a safe educational space for the children, but can further provide the opportunity to parents to go to work, and continue to earn an income to support their families.
Now, schools are back in action and we will continue our educational support at local creches and primary school whilst we recharge for the coming school holiday when we will return to our soup kitchen at the local library. Thank you to all the donors and supporters of this program. Without your generosity, we would not be able to continue to feed the children in the outskirts of Cape Town and contribute to SDG 2 – a world free from hunger.
Thank you for supporting us!
With Gratitude,
GVI Gordons Bay Community
