Dear Supporters,
During the Celanese time with GVI Cape Town, the group completed a full renovation at Nceduluntu Grade R during a two week period. During the two weeks, the group repainted the inside and outside of the class room, painted educational murals which were to be used as educational tools for the local teacher Grace. Educational murals are essential in educational centres like Nceduluntu as they lack the space and resources to be able to have the students and teacher to store the resources and work inside the classroom as well as work by individual tables.
In collaboration with Grace, the group drew plans for the murals and continuously communicated with the teacher to ensure that it matched her needs. In addition to this, GVI built shelves to provide additional floor space in the classroom to give the 28 pupils space to learn. As part of the Grade R curriculum, the students must learn about vegetables and their growth whilst GVI wants to incorporate the education surrounding sustainable cities and livelihoods. To fill this need, the Celanese Foundation built gardening boxes for the school to be used as a teaching tool through all months of the year. The gardening boxes will be used when students learn about weather, seasons, vegetables as well as colours and shapes.
Whilst the volunteers’ efforts contributed to a stimulating learning environment for the pupils, there were certain resources which the students could not construct or build individually. This is where the donation from Celanese group was much appreciated and needed at the centre. To improve the health and safety standards at the institutions the funds donated was spent on refilling and updating the fire extinguisher to meet the requirements to be open as an educational facility but more essentially to ensure that it could put out a fire if needed and keep the children away from harm. Further, Grace had asked for laminating sheets to be able to laminate additional learning material and student’s work to reduce the level of paper consumption
With Love,
GVI Cape Town
