FROM SURVIVAL TO OPPORTUNITY
A Recovery Update for Our Individual Donors and Supporters | October 2026
Dear Friends and Supporters,
When families escaped the siege and atrocities in El Fasher, many arrived in Omdurman having lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. Yet they carried something the violence could not take away: their determination to care for their families and rebuild their lives.
At Darfur Women Network (DWN), we listen to survivors and invest in the skills they already have. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all assistance, our community-led team provides practical business support, mentoring, and follow-up—working alongside people as partners in their own recovery.
YOUR SUPPORT IS HELPING CREATE REAL CHANGE
Our first group includes 30 displaced families—27 women-led and three men-led households. Twenty-seven participants have completed both stages of their approved livelihood investment; three additional participants have joined the group.
One juice seller once had to borrow containers, ice, and ingredients just to start his day. With support, he now has three larger containers, sells three varieties of juice, has new serving cups, and reported zero debt at follow-up. A woman selling tea and coffee has added new products, including Sudanese-style ice cream. Others have acquired stoves, chairs, and supplies, reducing their reliance on daily borrowing.
These may seem like small changes. For families rebuilding after devastating displacement, owning the tools of their work, keeping more of their earnings, and making their own decisions are meaningful steps toward dignity and independence.
THANK YOU FOR BELIEVING IN SURVIVORS
To every individual donor, friend, and supporter: thank you. Your compassion and trust help transform survival into opportunity. You are not simply supporting a small business—you are standing with mothers, fathers, and families determined to build a future for themselves.
We are not simply helping people survive. We are investing in their ability to rebuild their own futures.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Mastora Bakhiet
