Emergency Support for Newly Displaced Families from El Fasher to Norht Sudan

Introduction

On behalf of the Darfur Women Network (DWN), we extend our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to GlobalGiving for your emergency support during one of the darkest and most traumatic moments in our history — the genocide committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher on October 26–27, continuing to this very day.

We also extend our appreciation to all individuals and partners worldwide who raised their voices, organized gatherings, and stood in solidarity with the survivors of genocide in El Fasher and with the people of Sudan. Your compassion ensures that the voices of those who cannot speak for themselves are heard loudly and clearly. Together, we keep their hope alive.

For more than two years, El Fasher has been under siege. Once a vibrant city of families, students, and farmers, civilians became trapped without food, medicine, or shelter. Even animal feed—the last means of survival—disappeared. Mothers cradled their children with nothing left to give.

The attacks have been merciless. Civilians were hunted like animals. The elderly and wounded lay waiting for help that never came. This is not a civil war — it is a war on civilians targeted because of their ethnicity and land.

Many were killed, others wounded, and thousands fled — weak, starving, and terrified — searching for safety. Families became separated, loved ones went missing, and entire communities were wiped out.

This is not only a tragedy for Darfur — it is a failure of humanity.

The international community remained silent during the genocide of 2003, and it is silent again today.
In the face of this silence, Darfur Women Network refuses to be silent.

Thanks to GlobalGiving’s urgent support, we were able to respond immediately and bring lifesaving relief to families who escaped to El Daba in North Sudan.

How Funds Were Used

GlobalGiving’s emergency grant enabled DWN to provide rapid life-saving assistance to families arriving with nothing after fleeing the genocide.

Funds were used to purchase and deliver:

• 1,000 blankets to protect families from cold nights
• 500 large floor mats for households with many children
• 500 small mats for elderly individuals and small families
• Food assistance and clean water for those who had gone days without eating
• Transportation support and safety coordination for volunteers delivering aid
• Communication and monitoring supplies to identify urgent needs on the ground

These resources were distributed directly to 700 newly displaced families in El Daba.

Every item delivered represented dignity, safety, and hope for people who had lost everything.

Impact of This Grant

This emergency grant from GlobalGiving had a profound and immediate impact:

700 families received life-saving emergency support

These families arrived exhausted, starving, and traumatized. For many, the blankets and mats were the first comfort they had since escaping.

Improved health and safety

Sleeping on the ground exposes families to cold, insects, and disease. Mats and blankets reduced health risks for children, newborns, and the elderly.

Restored dignity and emotional relief

Survivors repeatedly told us:
“We thought the world forgot us. But you came.”
Receiving support reminded them they were not alone.

Strengthened community-based emergency response

DWN volunteers, themselves displaced survivors, were able to take quick action and deliver assistance where no other organizations were present.

Hope in a moment of despair

This support reached civilians at the exact moment when many felt abandoned by the world.

In this piece, I reflect on my own journey of genocide, displacement, refugees, and resilience and how too often the global narrative frames refugees only as passive victims. At Darfur Women Network (DWN), we know this is far from the truth. Refugees are active responders, creators, and changemakers who build strength, care for their families, and shape their communities every single day.

This recognition is not only my story—it is our collective story together. Through your generosity, DWN continues to provide:

• Safe stoves to protect women from violence and reduce harmful smoke.
• Clean water containers to preserve health and dignity in refugee camps.
• Economic empowerment programs so women can earn an income and support their children.
• Life-saving Assistance Services to hundred thousands of displaced, injured civilians in sieged city of El Fasher, N. Darfur, Sudan.
• Cross-Cultural Events to provide an opportunity for immigrants and Americans to learn and share cultures.

Today, the crisis in Sudan has displaced more than 12 million people. The need for awareness, solidarity, and action has never been greater. By amplifying refugee voices and supporting community-led solutions, we can bring both immediate relief and lasting resilience.
