Summary

The Disaster Tech-Training program aims to maintain resident awareness towards natural hazards during the time of COVID-19. The project will provide digital capacity building for 204 Indonesian villages exposed to hazards, and enable a free and accessible platform for critical information sharing. Using a train-the-trainer approach, we will train at least one person in each village to be Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) ambassador, who will then conduct follow-up training to their communities.

Challenge

Indonesia is highly prone to natural disaster -in 2019 there were >3700 number of events. As the COVID-19 pandemic requires people to physically distance, maintaining disaster awareness is challenging. There are >80,000 Indonesian villages at risk, which will affect community livelihoods. At the same time, resident access to information during emergency situation is limited. People should be able to share & utilize critical information to support decision making in timely manner to reduce risk.

Solution

PetaBencana will provide a set of skills in disaster risk reduction to 204 Indonesian villages. The skills are specifically trained via digital devices that does not require direct meeting, enabling trainees to transfer into wider community. In the end, villagers will have an access to share disaster information through a platform, which is also monitored by government & public. An open access to disaster information will lead to more efficient response, which can save lives and minimize loss.

Long-Term Impact

204 agent of DRR in villages will be the champions in the community, who can transfer the knowledge and skills to families and neighbor communities.
