Summary

Refugee Empowerment International is an independent non-profit organization. We support projects that provide opportunities for refugees to lead an independent normal life while staying near home and their loved ones. We ensure that the positive impact of all funded projects reaches beyond its primary beneficiaries creating a ripple effect that allows refugees to build sustainable communities in the long term. Projects that we fund address a broad range of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Challenge

Continuing armed conflicts have led to increased displacement around the world. Displaced people are left with no home, no livelihood, no access to education and no work opportunities. Although refugee camps and host communities provide some resources to address these issues, their infrastructure is reaching its limit. REI responds to these issues by funding projects that empower refugees to build a future for themselves and enable them to live an independent normal life with dignity.

Solution

REI listens to the communities to understand how to provide support. REI does not 'help' people but provides funding that creates opportunities for the community to build on their own resources in order to be sustainable. We do not have any staff on the ground because the strength comes from within the refugee and host community. We conduct projects visits each year to oversee the progress. REI is currently funding five projects around the world (Kenya, Thailand-Myanmar, and Lebanon).

Long-Term Impact

All projects funded by REI are an investment for the future. Beneficiaries not only rebuild their own lives but are able to pass on the skills and knowledge that they have learned to people around them. This promotes stronger integration within the community. By allowing refugees to take ownership of what they have built creates sustainability. It allows them to be independent of aid and to demonstrate that they can make a valuable economic contribution to the host community in a long term.
