Project Report | Jun 16, 2025
Stay flexible and focused

By Jane Best | Project leader

We are increasingly aware of how the projects funded by REI show strong alignment with successful business practices, particularly in areas of community engagement, and sustainable development. Business can learn from leadership styles we see in the projects to motivate diverse teams and create inclusive spaces where challenges become organisational strengths rather than stumbling blocks. Companies want to grow to remain competitive while refugee communities want to grow to achieve a degree of normality.

Over the reporting period, REI-supported projects continue to show measurable growth and positive ripple effects. Alumni and graduates are actively applying their learning within their communities, reinforcing the long-term sustainability of the REI model. This reflects the effectiveness of our bottom-up (or ‘hand-up’) approach, allowing ownership at the grassroots level.

Communities would clearly like to move away from aid dependency highlighting the importance of dignity and autonomy. Thus, the project leaders implement strategies that focus on building community resilience. This includes appropriate skill development and knowledge transfer to ensure ongoing local capacity-building.

Donors who have visited the projects note that the teams are well-coordinated, resourceful, and focused on delivering what is best for their communities. Despite limited resources, they achieve significant outcomes through innovation and collaboration. The teams bring together people across generations to work toward shared goals. Many of these efforts are being led by women, showcasing gender-inclusive leadership in action.

Team leaders are flexible as they have to motivate and unite individuals despite the frustration of long-term displacement.
It is so important to enable these forgotten communities to grow and strengthen. Your support allows this to happen.
