Summary

Only 30% of children who start primary school education reach grade six at the correct age and even less go onto secondary school. Having provided primary education for over 3,000 children to date we are now concentrating on putting between 600-1000 students through secondary school and college over the next ten years. We also supply extra school materials to primary school students thus helping to provide education from primary school to college.

Challenge

Children and teenagers in Guatemala are worth more working in the fields or helping in the home than being educated thus many are missing out on education. Since 2002 we have helped around 3000 children through primary school and, with these grades becoming more accesible over recent years with increased governmental spending, we have turned our attention to secondary school and college, which sadly remain a distant dream for the majority of students in rural communities.

Solution

Fly the Phoenix now provides scholarships for secondary school and college whilst implementing sustainable income plans for local families to help cover the additional costs of primary education. The minimum requirement for employment is secondary school at a minimum so by offering an access to this education we can add hundreds of teenagers to the workforce over the coming years which in turn increases regular income for hundreds more family members.

Long-Term Impact

We have created longterm plans which include sustainable income plans to empower communities to bring itself out of poverty through education and nutrition using sustainable methods. We have been working closely with many communities in Latin America since 2002 and have educated over 5,000 children opening up better job opportunities for each one and breaking the cycle of poverty.
