More than just ABCs!

Preparing their English notes!
Preparing their English notes!

Hi there

At Phoenix, we believe education is more than just teaching the basic curriculum, we believe it is also about showing the children what they can do with that education, where it will take them and what exciting opportunities there are when you have a good basis of education.

Recently, we were able to use some of the funds raised from our generous donors to take our older English students on a school trip to Antigua. Antigua is about an hour away from their town and some of them had never been before so were really excited! The reason they went was because a lot of people from smaller towns have come to Antigua and found very good jobs in tourism by having an excellent level of English. They went to six different places including banks, adventure shops, travel agents, a restaurant and an Art Gallery, all places where English is used in the work, and had to speak in English!!

Their faces lit up with excitement as they understood just where education could take them and what exciting and interesting work they could find if they studied hard. A lot of them also came away with some offers of work experience when they finished school.

A lot of the children in the school don't have any knowledge of where their education can take them, they have only seen thier their families work in the fields and in the home, they don't understand what opportunities are out there! On the way home they couldn't stop chatting about what they want to do and how hard they were going to study to get there!!
