Our Young Orchestra Performs for Their Community

Dear Friends of Rock-Paper-Scissor’s Music Program,

We hope this newsletter finds you all well. It’s hard to believe that winter is almost over and we are heading slowly into spring! Right now in Vietnam we have two volunteers from Rhode Island visiting Cam Duc, helping out with music and art classes, and our bikes for girls program. They have reported back, amazed with how thoughtful and hard working all of the kids are, and how important these programs are for the children and their community.

The photo above was taken last month when our string ensemble performed for the Tet New Year Holiday, at the local church. We hope that you enjoy seeing the outcome of your gifts and the beauty of the kids performing! The kids are really practicing hard and continue to learn in leaps and bounds. The best part about our performances is that all ages take part, and all levels of students participate. The kids really have a great time together.

In the summer, myself, my two daughters, and one of our Board members will be taking three-four high school student violinists and artists to work with the kids. We are currently requesting a small grant from a music organization to also hire a Vietnamese violinist for the summer to further build the orchestra with the kids. In addition, we are trying to recruit at least two percussionists, to help us teach rhythm and drumming as part of our summer camp program in the ethnic minority village of Son Tan. We are always open to hearing from volunteers who might be interested in traveling with us.

Although all of you have donated to our music program, I wanted to share with you a competition we are currently in called the GlobalGiving Girl Fund contest. Many of you may know that in addition to our music and art programs, we also started a small program to provide bicycles to girls in Vietnam, to help them get to school faster and safer. Right now we are in the top four non-profits to win this contest—which would mean monthly funding until 2018! This would be an amazing thing for our small, family-run nonprofit.

If you would like to help us win, the contest is based on the number of donors to our Bikes for Girls project, not the amount of each donation, so we are asking you to please vote for us by giving $10.00 towards a new bike for a girl! And because donations count as votes in this contest, please ask your spouse, partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, friends, family and neighbors to help us win by voting with a $10.00 donation as well!

Thank you everyone! Wish us luck!
