Emergency Response to Cyclone Amphan ans COVID-19

By Saumitro Charkrabarti | Project Contributor

Distribution of mask among the coastal villagers
Distribution of mask among the coastal villagers

Bangladesh is a disaster vulnerable south Asian small country. Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh is the front line of global climate change. People of this region are ultra poor and they have to face natural disasters like cyclone, flood, drought, erratic rainfall, riverbank erosion etc. all over the year. So, it becomes quite difficult for them to recover from heavy loss caused by disaster. They usually remain helpless and wait for government or NGOs to come for their relief and rehabilitation support.

Since March 8, 2020, Bangladesh has been facing the bitterness of global pandemic COVID-19. So, Bangladesh Government has restricted outside movement of general people in order to reduce the spreading of this fatal virus. So, poor people became more vulnerable as they couldn’t go outside for earning. So, in some cases they have to remain starving with all their family members. In such a situation Super cyclone Amphan devastated the Sundarbans coastal region on May 20, 2020. Around 6000 people took shelter in BEDS Cyclone Shelter and Training Center and got immediate food support. Many low-lying areas were inundated, embankments collapsed, trees uprooted and houses damaged by this super cyclonic event in the coastal districts of Bangladesh. The loss was really huge and people were at a loss! These duel crisis led the coastal economy broken down.

In such a situation Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) started trying to raise fund for the COVID-19 and Amphan affected community from GlobalGiving platform. A project was uploaded on GlobalGiving platform named Emergency Response to Cyclone AMPHAN and COVID-19. Target grant for this project is 65,000 $. So far 3,845 $ is raised from 51 donations. We hope that we would be able to draw the attention of the kind hearted donors so that our target can be achieved in the quickest time possible.

We have already provided masks among our target community and have been conducting awareness program regarding COVID-19 pandemic. We have distributed water jars and sheep among the target community. We also planted 5000 mangroves for embankment protection. Now we are monitoring our supported villagers’ activities. We are providing advices to the villagers where necessary.

We would like to show our gratitude to all our respected donors who have been supporting us. We hope that you will continuously be with us to support the coastal vulnerable community and provide them an opportunity to return to their normal life.
