Summary

It is great to give hungry children food. It is better to teach them how to take care of their own needs. Live and Learn in Kenya International feeds over 460 children on a daily basis. With their school "shamba" garden, the children are taught how to grow their own food with the help of their parents, who tend the field. But the field is much too small for our needs. Now that we have 3 cows, we would like to buy the neighboring field to grow more vegetables for the children.

Challenge

Providing meals to over 460 children 6 days a week is a challenge that we enjoy taking. Watching the children grow stronger and healthier every day is a great feeling for all involved. But how will the children learn to fend for themselves later on in life if everything is given to them? We consider this a challenge as well.

Solution

We have rented farm land for a school "shamba" where parents plant, weed and harvest the beans and greens along with the children so they not only see what their parents are doing for them and the LLK community - they are also a part of it by assisting them on weekends. Now we want to go a step further and after building a cow shed for 3 donated cows for milk and dung for our natural gas installation, we plan to buy the neighboring field to harvest more vegetables and build a chicken coop.

Long-Term Impact

Being able to provide the children with fresh milk every day and eggs for cooking and for breakfast a couple of times the week will be a huge help towards keeping them healthy and strong. We have received a donation providing the center with a natural gas generator using cow manure. Now we really need more farm land to provide for the necessary vegetables - and give us a place to build a large chicken coop. Children learn best by good examples set by adults and by trying it out themselves.
