Summary

Down syndrome is a genetic condition which occurs when the 21st chromosome has a full or partial, extra copy. This additional genetic material may cause developmental delays. KDSP's Early Childhood Intervention program, consisting of physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy, will help 177 children with Down syndrome achieve their developmental milestones timely. These therapies are offered in-house by trained professionals with a breadth of knowledge and experience.

Challenge

The first 1000 days in the life of a child with Down syndrome are crucial since development is at its peak and the mind is most absorbent. Along with lack of awareness about early intervention therapies, there is a dearth of quality, subsidized therapy clinics which are suited to the needs of children with Down syndrome. This puts parents/caregivers in a tough spot, making them either forego therapy sessions completely or opt for substandard quality solutions.

Solution

KDSP provides subsidized physical, occupational and speech therapies for 177 children aged 0-7 years at its state-of-the-art facility. These therapies help in four main areas of development: gross motor and fine motor skills, language, social development and self-help skills. One-on-one sessions are conducted so the therapist can give undivided attention to meet each child's needs through customized therapy plans, which are also reinforced by the parents/caregivers at home.

Long-Term Impact

Physical therapy benefits the child in achieving milestones such as neck holding, independent sitting, walking and running; occupational therapy enables participation of the child in their occupations of everyday life i.e. work, play and activities of daily living and speech therapy provides support for communication, speech, language and swallowing. There is no greater joy for a parent than witnessing the first time their child rolls over, their first smile, or the first baby step they take!
