Challenge

On the night of September 8th, a massive 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. According to local sources, the total number of victims from this disaster measure nearly 3,000 dead and over 5,500 injured. This earthquake is reported to be the most deadly in Morocco's history, with the epicenter located just 45 miles west of Marrakech. Thousands living in remote areas to the south of the city are cut off from resources outside the reach of initial support efforts.

Solution

Soleterre ONLUS has been active in Morocco since 2002, offering medical and psychological assistance to thousands of people through our local efforts in partnership with the Pediatric Oncology Department at the Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire Mohammed VI in Marrakech. Our team is already on the ground doing their part to provide initial aid, but much more is needed. Our goal is to extend the reach of our economic aid programs, focus on mental health for children impacted, and supply medicines.

Long-Term Impact

Soleterre welcomes local children undergoing cancer treatments to stay at Dar al Amal, or "House of Hope," together with their families. Donations will help us grow our local team of psychologists to support survivors of this tragedy to cope with the psychological impacts. We will also help those isolated by this disaster to reach the hospital in Marrakech, offer psychological and economic support to women and children who have been injured by the quake, and supply chemotherapy medicines.
