Following the distribution of blankets in mid-October 2023 to households affected by the earthquake in western Afghanistan, Peace Winds is preparing, together with our local partner organization, to provide multi-purpose cash assistance to those in need. Although three months have passed since the earthquake occurred on October 7 2023, many affected people are still forced to live in tents in areas where homes were completely or partially destroyed.

Over the past three months, staff members from our partner organizations have paid several visits to the affected areas. They have met with local Herat government officials, UN agencies, and affected community members to assess the damage and the needs of survivors. Peace Winds coordinated with humanitarian organizations to conduct a survey, and we found that cash assistance is the type most preferred by earthquake-affected families. The need for assistance such as transportation, food, or hygiene supplies differs greatly between households and geographic areas, and many families have concerns about where to store items if they receive aid all at once.

To transfer cash to families in need, Peace Winds is working with local partners, authorities, and humanitarian organizations to prioritize those who have not yet received assistance. We will continue working to support earthquake survivors in Afghanistan and will bring updates as we are able. Please visit our GlobalGiving page to make a donation in support of Peace Winds’ programs for earthquake survivors around the world.

This project is funded by grants from the Japan Platform and by generous donations from our supporters. We thank you for your continued support.
