Summary

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit northeastern Afghanistan in the Badakhshan province on Monday, October 26th, claiming more than 300 lives in Afghanistan and Pakistan, destroying many buildings, and displacing thousands of people. At least 4 AAE schools in northeastern Afghanistan have been affected and we have a list of 50+ families in need of immediate aid.

Challenge

5 of our schools and hundreds of students and their families, as well as the entire community, have been devastated by the earthquake in Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan. Students in the neighboring province of Parwan have also lost their homes. Because of the region's remoteness, we are still receiving new information regarding the situation and will be updating as needed.

Solution

By utilizing long standing community relationships, AAE will work to define the needs of students, their families, and the community to best help them rebuild their lives in a sustainable, lasting way. Badakhshan needs the support of local partners such as AAE to focus on long term recovery.

Long-Term Impact

Badakhshan is an impoverished province of Afghanistan and winter is soon approaching. Without fast action, the poor will be left without housing throughout a harsh winter. They are in need of long-term recovery that will last far beyond when the large aid organizations leave. We will be posting regular updates about how the funds are being used once we determine how they can best be used to support earthquake victims.
