Two earthquakes of magnitudes above 7.5 hit southeastern Turkey on Feb 6th, razing villages and cities like Hatay, Antakya. Hundreds of thousands of families lost their houses, families and loved ones. As the area hit was immense, rescue efforts for people under the rubble and immediate aid for those lucky to be above need the support of every organization.
3600 students in the region has been receiving high school and university scholarships from CYDD. CYDD has 7 branches in the area (Adana, Cukurova, Osmaniye ,Gaziantep, Hatay, Antakya and Iskenderun) and they are trying to reach each of our students. It was assessed that houses of 52% of them were damaged and 70% had to lodge outside of their homes.
We are paying 1000 tl to each our students and their families in the region that we can reach. This will help them with their emergency needs such as warm clothing, telephone cards for communication, tickets for transportation to leave the disaster area. Humanitarian aid given to earthquake survivors is not well organized as the disaster area is vast. CYDD has also formed a disaster emergency group that works 24 hours and coordinates survivor needs and humanitarian aid.
These efforts are only a beginning to help keep the survivors alive under extreme conditions of stress, hunger and cold. Once the rescue efforts are finished, CYDD will be setting up portable container centers for psychological support and rehabilitation of the survivors. Temporary Educational facilities and permanent student dorms are also being planned. CYDD had been active for a long time in Izmit 1999 earthquake area and has an experienced team of volunteers ready to work.
