As of May 2022, 28 million people across East Africa - especially Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and South Sudan are facing critical hunger, this figure is set to rise. For the fourth consecutive season, due to climate change the rains have failed again. This terrible drought, coupled with war in Ukraine, means that food supplies have never been so decimated. It is estimated that at present one person is dying every 48 seconds from hunger in the region.
Due to climate change, for four consecutive years, the rains have failed in East Africa. Whilst there have been previous heavy droughts, the scale of the crisis in 2022 has never been seen before. Now those least responsible for global warming are paying the highest price for it with 28 million people at risk of famine, and one person dying of hunger every 48 seconds as crops wither and livestock die. The war in Ukraine has caused food prices to skyrocket globally deepening the crisis.
Oxfam is working across the region to provide life-saving support to those most in need of help. We're making sure the most vulnerable people have access to safe water and helping to repair boreholes and wells, we are also trucking in emergency water and training people to look after and maintain their own water supply. We are also carrying out food and cash distributions to help people have access to food. We urgently need to scale up our efforts to help save more lives.
In South Sudan, Oxfam helped more than 600,000 people across the country in 2016 and with famine declared we will need to reach many more people this year. In Ethiopia, we have helped over 270,000 people, and aim to help another 450,000 people in the next three months. In Kenya, we aim to reach over 300,000 people within the next six months, repairing boreholes and distributing cash. In Somalia we are launching our humanitarian response, and plan to reach 10,000 people.
