In partnership with local organizations, Oxfam is continuing to respond to the devastating effects of drought and acute hunger across Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. Together, with your help, we continue to support vulnerable communities through various vital projects. Since March 2024, Oxfam has been:

Providing Essential Water and Sanitation:

  • Rehabilitating and expanding two boreholes in Somalia (Dhogorjiir and Aboker), providing safe water access to over 3,500 individuals.
  • Rehabilitating three Birkas (traditional water reservoirs) in Hargelle and Cherrati, Ethiopia, improving water access for 3,600 individuals.
  • Distributing WASH kits, including soap, plastic jerry cans, and buckets, to 160 households in Charetti, Ethiopia, benefitting approximately 800 people.

Supporting Vulnerable Families with Cash Transfers:

  • Distributing multi-purpose cash transfers, reaching 188,608 people in the Somali Region of Ethiopia (Jarar, Fafan, and Korehay zones), helping families meet essential needs like food, water, and healthcare.
  • In Kenya, cash transfers have supported over 128,000 people in Garissa and 116,000 in Mandera, helping vulnerable communities rebuild after floods and drought.

Immediate Food and Livelihood Assistance:

  • Under the Blanket Supplementary Feeding Program (BSFP), more than 2,400 children under the age of two were fed at the Pading and Lankien distribution points in South Sudan.
  • Providing voucher-based livestock treatment for 2,000 vulnerable households in Aware, Dagahbur, and Gunagado, Ethiopia, treating livestock with essential medication to protect their livelihoods.
  • Livestock vaccination and feed support are underway in pastoral areas of Kenya, helping communities recover from the impacts of prolonged drought and floods.

Dignity and Hygiene Support for Women and Girls:

  • Trained 24 staff in Jigjiga, Ethiopia, on gender protection and prevention of violence against women and girls.
  • In Kenya’s Garissa and Tana River counties, Oxfam is working to improve hygiene and sanitation for displaced families, reaching over 169,000 people.
