In Somaliland, Oxfam is transforming access to safe water for 30,000 displaced people and vulnerable host communities across six villages in the Sool and Sanaag regions.
Through the Development of a Model for Sustainable Drinking Water Supply in Fragile Contexts project, Oxfam is installing renewable energy–powered desalination plants, building pipeline networks, and setting up community tap stands that replace unsafe and saline water sources.
In Ceeldhaab, a mother now collects clean water from the new desalination system - a dramatic shift from the past when water was scarce, salty, and unsafe.
By combining modern desalination technology with locally led water management systems and cost-recovery mechanisms, this project is ensuring communities can maintainequitable, sustainable water access long after it ends.
Funded in partnership with the German Federal Foreign Office, this initiative is not only responding to an urgent water crisis but also reducing protection risks, improving health outcomes, and creating a model for long-term solutions across Somaliland and beyond.
Help us scale up our response across East Africa
Across East Africa, millions of people are facing the devastating impacts of conflict, displacement, and climate change. Oxfam and our partners are delivering life-saving assistance - providing clean water, emergency food, cash support, and hygiene supplies to those most in need.
But the scale of the crisis is immense - and we need your support to reach more people.
Your donation can help us deliver clean water and vital aid to families in Somalia and to communities across Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Sudan.
Together, we can support long-term, sustainable solutions for the future.
