Summary

IsraAID has worked in South Sudan, the youngest country in the world, since 2011 providing life-saving programming focusing on preventing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) - a human rights violation that while rampant, lacks the proper infrastructure for survivors to get the treatment they need and deserve. UNDP estimates that 65% women and girls in South Sudan will or are be survivors of GBV.

Challenge

Conflict in South Sudan has continued on and off since July 2013, when heavy fighting claimed the lives of hundreds and displaced tens of thousands more. Today, conditions in South Sudan are dire: 80% of the country's population lives on less than a dollar a day; 7.1 million people are in need of aid; and 1.83 million are internally displaced persons (IDPs). When fighting breaks out, women are deliberately targeted with rape, domestic violence, and weak support mechanisms.

Solution

In order to respond to this ongoing crisis, IsraAID South Sudan is seeking support for our Women and Girls Friendly Spaces (WGFS). The need for mental health support, a safe space, case management, and access to social workers is deeply urgent. Without IsraAID's WGFS, the situation for vulnerable women and girls will rapidly deteriorate.

Long-Term Impact

Currently IsraAID South Sudan manages twelve WGFS across the country. Each location is a safe haven for women and girls to receive desperately needed services, strengthen community systems, and access information about their rights. Each week between 100-300 women attend programming at each center, run by 2-3 staff members and supported by locally recruited community focal points. Each WGFS offers a core set of services complemented by additional activities based on requests from the community.
