The first STEM Center opens in South Sudan!

First STEM center in South Sudan opens!

The first Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center opens in South Sudan!

The center will provide an advanced educational framework for South Sudanese youth, training them to become engineers, technicians, mechanics and physicians, who will contribute to the economic and social development of South Sudan. Over the next three years, the center will provide vocational training to over 10,000 young people in South Sudan!

In November, the University of Juba, in partnership with IsraAID, STEM Synergy, Mark Gelfand Family Charitable Fund and UNESCO, opened the first Center for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in South Sudan.

The Center will train South Sudanese youth to become engineers, technicians, mathematicians and physicians, contributing to the economic and social development of South Sudan. Over the next three years, the Center will provide vocational training to 10,000 young people in subjects such as building and construction; electronics; computing; chemistry and optics.

The Center was officially opened by the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, H.E. James Wani Igga, on behalf of the President of South Sudan, H.E. Salva Kiir, demonstrating the country’s commitment to higher scientific and technology education, and an academic and vocational training strategy in South Sudan.

IsraAID has been working with the University of Juba since 2016 providing training, technical support and facilitating the establishment of the STEM Center. The University will now lead the process, while IsraAID and STEM Synergy will continue to provide technical support and training throughout the second phase of this project.

The result today is impressive. But there is more work to come. We need to focus our efforts on bringing STEM awareness and knowledge into the communities, so that all South Sudanese, women, men, girls and boys, have access to information and education.” Mr. Tim Berke, IsraAID Country Director in South Sudan.

IsraAID’s mandate in South Sudan is to accompany national partners (government and civil society) in their efforts to design, implement, deliver, monitor and evaluate sustainable projects, programs and services of quality that meet the protection, health and education needs of communities affected by conflict and displacement.

Our work is only possible with your support - thank you!
