Eastern Equatoria State of South Sudan borders Uganda. It is home to several ethnic groups. Upon independence, South Sudan returnees resettled first here. It quickly became the bread basket of the country. With peace, the country would be food secure. But the whole region is now a civil war zone. Communities have been displaced, or are refugees in Uganda. Homes have been destroyed, and so have livelihoods. Isolated IDP camps exist along main roads. SSGID supports interethnic peace efforts.
The problem in Eastern Equatoria of South Sudan mass displacement of communities and their livelihoods owing to extreme insecurity. Even places of worship have been vandalized. More than two million refugees from the region live in Uganda, while at least five million are IDPs main towns in South Sudan according to UNOCHA. Efforts for citizens to return home are futile due to intolerance. This project benefits IDPs, and community leaders by enabling peaceful coexistence by different ethnicities
Organize community meetings to discuss grievances and build understanding. Facilitate cultural events to celebrate shared heritage and respect between communities. Support productive projects for displaced single mothers Support peace-building learning visits by communities and leaders to learn from more tolerant societies in East Africa. Using Peace Media Campaigns to spread messages of peace and tolerance through local radio, music, and social media actively involving affected communities.
SSGID visualises a situation where Eastern Equatoria of South Sudan is resettled, peaceful and communities engage in productive activities on their ancestral lands without fear. Thus, the beneficiaries will be the children, women, elderly, and community leadership. Even the central government will benefit through increased local production of food thereby reducing its dependency on food imports. This project will directly impact at least two million through the peace dividends arising.
