Summary

Eastern Cape communities have suffered the effects of severe rains over the period of 08 - 11 February 2023. Among those worst affected are families who lost their mud homes and all their belongings that were washed away during the flooding. Gift of the Givers responded to these families with emergency relief aid providing meals and blankets at their place of refuge. We've commenced our long-term intervention that entails the rebuilding of homes and infrastructure.

Challenge

Among the worst affected are the families who were living in mud houses when the flooding occurred in February in the Eastern Cape. Their homes never stood a chance against the rushing waters that took with it, not only their homes, but all their belongings too. Damage to infrastructure also meant that children are unable to reach school coupled with them no longer having school clothing and learning material.

Solution

Gift of the Givers initial response included the provision of food and blankets. As there is a greater need for support, we will begin the process of rebuilding homes and infrastructure to provide a permanent solution.

Long-Term Impact

Through the provision of permanent brick and mortar housing, Gift of the Givers builds resilience among vulnerable communities. This puts them in a better position to withstand severe weather conditions. On the other hand the provision of permanent housing uplifts the overall well-being and sense of pride and value among families.
