This project aims at increasing the accessibility of palliative care services to the rural and hard to reach areas by supporting home visits by volunteers.This arrangement will help to reduce the cost the patients/households bear to access the services at the District Hospital about 70 km away. The impact of the project is that more than 90 % of patients in the hard to reach areas will have opportunity of accessing quality and inclusive palliative care service by patient on life long illness
The problem is lack of palliative care services to rural and hard to reach areas in Rumphi. Rumphi is one of the districts in Malawi with many hard to reach rural areas due to its mountainous terrain. 250 patients on palliative care in these areas do not have routine checkups, no access to drugs and no skilled palliative care providers visit these patients due to lack of funding, So patients opts for traditional healers who often worsen their conditions.
Project aims at increasing the accessibility of palliative care services to the rural and hard to reach areas by supporting the home visit using 10 trained volunteers. Project is also engaging a volunteer nurse who will be visiting the patients as much as possible. This arrangement will help to reduce the cost the patients/households bear to access the services at the District Hospital about 70 km away on the same time giving the patients opportunity of accessing quality service at home
This project will make palliative care service easily accessible to 250 patients in rural and hard to reach areas thereby reducing the cost the patients/households bear to access the services at the District Hospital about 70 km away. The availability of the service will reduce suffering and maintain human dignity, during and in the aftermath of crises to both patients and their families.
