Summary

The ISurvivedEbola Campaign is a transmedia project that mobilizes Ebola survivors from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone to share stories of recovery to inform the West African general public about the virus and how they can protect themselves and their communities from it, reduce stigmatization, and promote reintegration of Ebola survivors.

Challenge

Despite the outpouring of support to the region, the Ebola epidemic continues to threaten the lives and health of countless thousands in West Africa. Uncertainty, misinformation, and lack of public trust in health systems and governments have aggravated the medical, social, and economic impacts of the outbreak. Many Ebola survivors are being stigmatized instead of embraced. Access to timely and reliable information remains uneven; denial, fear, and panic continue to pose challenges.

Solution

We believe that by sharing true stories of Ebola survival, we can engage more people to adopt protective behaviors, reduce survivor stigma, and promote reintegration and national recovery. The transmedia campaign uses role models to reinforce Ebola prevention techniques and support Ebola survivors to overcome social stigma. Other activities include broadcasting Ebola-focused radio dramas, songs and music videos, mobile and online platforms to increase interaction between survivors.

Long-Term Impact

Radio is the most powerful form of mass communication in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, where access to television is uneven and illiteracy rates are high. The project mobilizes survivors to use their new-found Ebola immunity to assist affected communities. Through this project, Ebola survivors will reinforce life-saving messages through the radio drama series and broadcast critical health information through community radio. Please support Ebola survivors and our recovery work.
