INEB Eco-Temple Project Update
To all our wonderful donors and supporters,
Thank you so much for your belief in the vision of the Eco-Dharma Camp! Due to the success of the first iteration we held last May on Koh Yor, we are pleased to continue developing the reach and content of our programme. Thanks to the warm reception we received at Thippayasathan Dhamma Bhikkhuni Arama, we have plenty of new ideas to incorporate into our future endeavours.
From an evaluation conducted with the participants after the camp, a few ideas emerged. Firstly, participants greatly enjoyed the visit to the Tone Nga Chang Waterfall that allowed them to explore their connection to nature in an embodied way. To open up our senses to hear, feel and taste the world around us, we can learn much more about inner and outer ecology in a way that just focusing on one would not allow. Furthermore, the participants are happy that our activities are centred around the nature of awareness, and can be placed alongside traditional Buddhist teachings on meditation without contradiction. Embodied practices, which connect our physical body with our emotional and mental states, can be expanded to include the world around us. We learned that this is a core aspect towards aligning ourselves to the flourishing of ourselves and our environment.
However, what participants also wanted to see was more direct engagement with the specific context of their local area. We worked with Thippayasathan because of our long standing friendship with their monastic community, which allowed us to enter their spaces not as strangers. However, another aspect of the camp was to bring various bases of knowledge to the participants, from organisations that work in the environmental field in other areas around the country. While these sessions could be somewhat tailored to the local context, they missed the practical, hands-on element that the participants found so enjoyable. For example, though it was commonly known that Hat Yai had faced some of the most severe flooding they have experienced in decades, we could have spent more time exploring the intricate and specific issues that local communities faced in that time, in addition to the lessons on climate change as a whole. In future, we would strive to find more local speakers who can also pitch in during the final session where we workshopped future activities that the participants could continue after the camp has ended.
A core aspect of the Eco-temple network vision has been to bridge the relationship between temples and the communities they are situated in. We are working towards a world where laypeople and the temple collaborate more in strengthening their resilience, especially in times of crisis and change. We believe that central to this effort is to continue our work in educating and working with both lay and monastic communities to find ways to work together in furthering an ecologically sustainable society.
When we opened registration for the Eco-dharma camp, though we limited applications to thai-speaking participants for this pilot program, we still received many applications from monastics abroad who were interested in this initiative. This is why we see it as a natural extension to develop a program that can be held in our partner institutions with English-speaking participants, both in Thailand and abroad. Please stay tuned for further developments for future Eco-Dharma Camps!
In January of next year, INEB will be holding its 22nd Biennial Conference in Taiwan. As a part of this, the Eco-Temple Network will be holding its own activities to coordinate all our member’s knowledge and activities in the environment and ecology space; we as the secretariat are excited to facilitate further explorations of inner and outer ecology. In order to achieve this, we will be organising a site visit to a national park or local farm. Discussions on where our members would like to go are still underway, so if you are interested in taking part please check into our monthly meetings! Feel free to reach out to sustainability@inebnetwork.org if you would like more details.
This year, we have witnessed and grieved through so many stories of loss in our communities around the world. Disasters are becoming frequent and more severe, despite all the progression of technologies designed to prevent such events. We in the Eco-Temple will continue our work with conviction and faith, in the hopes that we can collectively see a path ahead that is safe for us all. Thank you for being a part of this journey.
May all beings be at peace and well,
The Eco-Temple Secretariat
