Shacks, Signs, and Success: An Eco Loo Update

By Jay Jay | Community Leader

Hello to all our wonderful donors and supporters,

As we move into the second quarter of 2026, I wanted to share some incredible news from the mountain. While we haven't yet raised the specific funds for our large Community Outreach Day, we refused to let that slow our momentum.

Grassroots Education To ensure the new toilets were used correctly and cared for, we got creative! We laminated instructional signs on how to use the composting system and, even more importantly, three dedicated community members went door-to-door (shack-to-shack) to explain the process to their neighbors.

The result? A total success! The community has fully embraced the system. Families are no longer relying on open potties at home, which is a massive win for dignity and hygiene. Plus, there is a real buzz of anticipation—everyone is counting down the nine months until the first batch of compost is ready to help their gardens grow!

Spreading the Idea Perhaps the most unexpected success is that the simple, effective design of these toilets has inspired the community. We’ve had several residents approach us, taken back by how doable the design is, asking for advice on how to build their own units in their yards. We are literally seeing a shift in how people think about sanitation.

The Challenges Ahead With winter approaching in June, we have a few urgent needs to protect what we’ve built and to keep growing:

  • Maintenance: We urgently need to varnish the exterior wood to protect the structure from the winter elements.

  • Community Pride: We still dream of bringing the local children together for a painting day. We want them to decorate the blocks so they feel a sense of "ownership" and pride, but we need to raise funds for the paint and supplies first.

  • Expansion: The demand is even higher than we anticipated. Queues have already started to form, and for those living at the bottom of the mountain, the walk up to the current block is quite a trek.

Our original goal was a second block of three, but seeing the need, we now realize we ideally need two more blocks (6 more toilets total) to properly serve the community.

Thank you for believing in this "small" project. As you can see from the queues and the neighbor-to-neighbor teaching, it is making a massive difference. If you can help us reach our next goal for paint or the next block of toilets, please consider a donation today.

With gratitude,
